This is my favorite photo of 2016 not just because it’s of my daughter, but because it captures her disposition. The day I took this picture of her, we were aimlessly wandering the lighthouse jetty. She was happy to be home from school for a short break and I was happy to have the time with her, if only for a few days. I told her to sit, stood over her and asked she look up at the camera. Those eyes. She’s always had those eyes. My mom and youngest brother has those eyes. She was born, eyes wide, staring and searching for the sound of my voice, for the world. There’s always a glint of hope riding the current behind those eyes.
