The first day of December, the first snow forecasted for this evening, the perfect day for a cup of hot chocolate to guard against the approaching cold. Interesting that today’s prompt is a window because I so love photographing the Williams-Sonoma holiday window displays. Every year I mark the start to the season with a trip to their shop for a can of Double Dark Hot Chocolate mix, mug toppers shaped like gingerbread men, and snowflake cutout marshmallows. These are my daughter’s favorite. I always sent them prior to the first snowfall while she was away at school. It’s now part of our holiday tradition. I’ve thought a lot lately about how to define home. Today, standing in the cold afternoon air, snow flurries a pirouette overhead, I felt the instant warmth of a familiar space, memories of the late night hot cocoa before, and what future winter-night sips may bring.
